Boat Fishing Tips for Beginners
If you’ve recently decided to have a go at boat fishing, you might find yourself needing some tips. Fishing on a boat is quite different than fishing on land and there are many great benefits to enjoy. You’ll have a much wider range of spots to check out and you’ll reach depths you wouldn’t have been able to access from land. When the fish aren’t biting in one location, start up the engine and move to the next spot.
Andersen Boats has put together a list of tips to help you adjust to this new style of fishing. For any and all of your boat and fishing needs, visit our dealership in Burnt Hills, New York near Saratoga Springs and Schenectady.
Pack Your Supplies
It goes without saying that having a boat makes it a lot easier to bring all your necessary supplies along. You don’t have to lug your gear around or worry about bugs or mud causing any problems. It’s also easier to set things down on a boat floor than an uneven patch of grass. You should take advantage of this added storage and bring everything you need like a tackle box, needle nose pliers, a net, sunscreen, drinking water, bug spray, and a first aid kit.
The key to catching fish is the bait. You’ll need some way to lure the fish toward your hook so you can reel them in. It’s important to ensure your bait is designated for the type of fish you wish to catch. Not all types of bait lure in all types of fish. We recommend using live bait as it will be much more effective in cashing fish. Always handle your bait with clean hands because fish have a keen sense of smell and they’ll be suspicious of a foreign scent.
Dress Accordingly
You’ll need to wear appropriate fishing gear on the boat. You can start with polarized sunglasses that help block UV rays and reduce the sun’s harsh glare on the water. Check the weather before heading out so you can wear the right amount of layers. If there’s even a slight chance of rain, you should be on the safe side and pack waterproof gear.
Speaking of gear, you’ll also need proper boat gear. A lifejacket is an excellent safety feature that you should always wear in case of an emergency. Something as simple as waves from passing boats can throw your balance off. If you were to fall overboard or be knocked unconscious, you’ll be thankful you had a lifejacket on. Waterproof boots are another great addition so you can get in and out of the water easily.
Check Laws and Regulations
Every state has different laws and regulations for fishing and boats on the water. Whether you happen to be adventuring in your home state or exploring an out-of-town fishing spot, you’ll need to look up the laws. Make sure you have the correct permits, license, and knowledge so you can be in compliance as you enjoy your fishing trip.
Find the Right Spot
When you first start fishing on a boat, you’ll love the fact that you’re not bound to the shore. You can fish pretty much anywhere on the water. Depending on what kind of fish you’re looking to catch, you can seek out locations they’re likely to be found in. For example, certain types of fish are found in very deep waters while others stick close to the shore. Choose your location based on the fish you’re wanting to catch. Settle into your spot and be patient. Of course, you can head to a new location if you’re not getting any bites after some time.
